what to wear for engagement photos:  a complete guide for montana couples

This article will answer all of your questions about what to wear for engagement photos (and then some!).  Engagement photos are a unique experience during this very special time in your lives, so choosing the right outfit is important, and can make all the difference in your final images!  The right clothing will enhance your photos and also help you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.  So let's dive in!

First of all, congratulations on your engagement!  Second, if you need help deciding what to wear for your engagement photos, you're in the right place!

The best engagement photos will, in a word, feel like you.  First and foremost, choose outfits that feel authentic to you and your partner.  Pick something that is stylish but fitting with your normal look and vibe.  If you love dressing up, then get fancy!  If you prefer a more casual look, that's fine too!  The key is to wear something that makes you feel comfortable, but also like a slightly souped-up version of yourself.

2.  Avoid Distracting Logos and Text

Large logos, brand names, and written text on clothing can pull attention away from what truly matters — you!  So go with solid colors or subtle patterns to keep the focus on your connection and expressions.

1.  Be Comfortable and Feel Like Yourself

3.  Coordinate, Don’t Match

Matching outfits can feel silly and contrived, so I recommend coordinating your colors instead, which will make your photos feel polished and more cohesive.   Here’s how:

4.  Fitted, Pressed Clothing is More Flattering

Although it might be tempting to hide behind oversized sweaters or loose clothing, form-fitting outfits actually are more flattering and photograph a lot better!  Flowing fabrics and structured pieces help define your shape in a pleasing way.  So try to avoid bulky layers; instead go for well-fitted tops, dresses, and pants that highlight your natural figure.

Also, be sure to iron or steam your outfit before the session!!  There is nothing worse than seeing large wrinkles or fold marks in your clothing in an otherwise beautiful image.  Clothing that looks crisp and well-kept will photograph much better than something with noticeable creases from being folded or stuffed in a bag.

I highly recommend bringing along a lint roller to your session — especially if you have pets!  Animal hair, dust, and lint can show up in photos more than you’d expect (especially on dark clothing), so a quick touch-up before shooting will help keep your outfit looking fresh and polished.

5.  Layering Adds Depth and Interest

Even if it’s not freezing outside, layers can enhance your look and add a lot of great variety to your images.  Consider things like jackets, cardigans, and scarves.  Layers also give you options to quickly switch up your look throughout the session without taking the time to make a full outfit change.

10 wardrobe tips for your engagement photos

  • Choose a color palette instead of matching exact colors. Think soft neutrals, earth tones, or jewel tones (rich colors like emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red, and amethyst purple). You can find lots of color palette inspiration on Pinterest.
  • Consider your location — if you're shooting in the mountains, earthy greens, browns, or deep blues will look great. If you're near a river or lake, soft blues, greens, and neutral tones can complement the natural water reflections. For forest sessions, rich jewel tones or warm earth tones (like mustard, deep red, or burnt orange) will pop against the green foliage.
  • Limit busy patterns — small floral prints or subtle textures are fine, but avoid large, distracting patterns.

6.  Accessories Add Variety

Adding a few accessories is a great way to help show your personality and also dress up a more casual look.  Consider:

7.  Avoid Neon & Extremely Bright Colors

Super bright or neon colors can reflect onto your skin, creating an unnatural color cast in your photos that can be very displeasing (and is often very difficult to remove during editing).  Instead, go with softer, muted tones or deep, rich colors that complement the natural surroundings.

8.  Consider Movement in Your Outfits

Flowy fabrics, maxi dresses, or skirts with movement add a romantic, dreamy feel to your photos — especially if there’s a breeze out.  There are lots of ways we can play with the fabric during your engagement session that will add motion and make your images more dynamic and interesting.  If you love a more romantic and whimsical look, choose outfits with fabrics that can move in the wind.

9.  Pay Attention to Necklines & Sleeves

Some cuts and styles photograph better than others.  Consider these flattering choices:

10.  Plan Footwear Based on Your Location

  • If we’re taking a short hike or walking through a field, wear comfortable shoes and carry along your “cute” shoes to swap into just before shooting.
  • Barefoot shots out in nature or near water can look earthy and beautiful — plan accordingly if you like this look (and consider bringing along a towel to clean off afterward).
  • Consider a fresh coat of nail polish (or clean, well-groomed nails), especially if you’ll be barefoot.  Hands and feet often front and center in close-up shots (especially close-up shots of your ring!), so a little attention to nail grooming can go a long way to keep your images clean and “polished” (no pun intended!!).
  • A stylish hat or beanie for a fun, playful touch
  • A cozy scarf for layering and extra texture
  • A blanket — perfect for snuggling up in colder weather and great for seated poses on the ground
  • Statement jewelry — just keep it minimal to avoid too much distraction
  • V-necks or scoop necks elongate the neck and create a natural, slimming effect (collar bones are also very flattering)
  • Off-the-shoulder tops or three-quarter sleeves add an elegant, soft look.
  • Sleeveless tops can draw attention to the arms, so consider your preferences and whether you’d like to draw the eye to or away from this area.

Winter Engagement Photos

  • Layer up to stay warm!  Stylish coats, fitted sweaters, scarves, and gloves will keep you cozy without adding bulk
  • Avoid wearing all white, as it will blend in too much with snowy backgrounds. Instead, opt for warm, rich colors like deep reds, navy, or forest green, which will really “pop” against a snowy landscape
  • Bring tissues (or a hanky) in case your nose or eyes run from the cold!
  • Hand or foot warmers are an easy way to keep toasty warm while shooting in the cold
  • A blanket not only can keep you warm between photos, but can also be a great photo prop… either to wrap around yourselves or throw on the ground and sit on!

Fall Engagement Photos

  • Montana’s fall foliage is rich in yellows and oranges, so choose outfits that complement these colors — think deep greens, rust, mustard, and burgundy.
  • Layer up with lightweight sweaters and stylish jackets to stay warm without adding bulk, which can make you appear blocky.
  • Boots and warm socks will keep your feet comfortable, especially if we’re shooting in a field or hiking to a scenic spot.

Spring Engagement Photos

Summer Engagement Photos

  • Shooting in the spring affords us the opportunity to shoot amidst Western Montana’s spectacular wildflowers — soft pastels, floral prints, and light neutrals will complement this scenery great
  • Bug spray is a must!  Mosquitoes can be utterly obnoxious, especially in grassy or wooded areas, so come plan ahead and come prepared!
  • Bring a blanket to sit on in wildflower fields (getting low to the ground brings the beautiful blooms into the frame)

Seasonal Outfit Tips for Engagement Photos in Montana

Since I photograph couples across Western Montana, I’ve learned that each season brings its own unique considerations in terms of wardrobe.   Here are some tips for each season…

  • Breathable fabrics will keep you cool and comfortable.  Lightweight cotton, linen, and flowy dresses are all great choices.
  • If we’re near a lake or river, consider wearing something that works for wading into the water — this can make for stunning, romantic shots!  You might want to bring along some river shoes and also a towel to dry off afterward.
  • A wide-brimmed sun hat can be a fun and stylish accessory to shoot with, as well as providing protection against the harsh sun
  • Bug spray is helpful, especially near lakes and rivers.

I recommend bringing at least two outfits — one casual and one slightly dressier.  This will help give variety in your photos.  If you’re ever unsure what to wear, feel free to bring along an extra option, and I'm always happy to take a look and help you decide which will work best based on the location and vibe of your session.

How many outfits should we bring to our Session?

Absolutely!  Props are a great way to personalize your session and add fun and interesting elements into your photos.  Consider bringing a cozy blanket, a bottle of champagne, or even something meaningful like a book or hobby-related item that represents your relationship and/or how you love spending free time together.

Can we bring props to our engagement session?

It is totally up to you!  Professional hair and makeup can help you feel extra beautiful and confident, and will photograph especially well.  However, it is totally not necessary.  If you prefer to do your own hair and makeup, that will be beautiful as well!  Just make sure your skin is well-moisturized and your hair is styled in a way that feels like you.

Should I get professional hair and makeup done?

Montana weather can be unpredictable, so beginning a few days before your shoot I will start eyeing the forecast.  If conditions look less than ideal (heavy rain, high winds, extreme cold), I’ll reach out and we can decide whether to reschedule the shoot or make an adjustment to our start time.

What if the weather is bad on the day of our Shoot?

Not to worry — most couples feel a little nervous at first, and that is completely normal and expected!  I will guide you through the shoot with prompts telling you exactly what to do so that you won't feel awkward or like you need to "perform".  My goal is to make the experience feel relaxed and easy, more like being on a casual outing with a close friend than a formal photo shoot!
