Male Model Photoshoot in Missoula:  Studio + Outdoor Portfolio Session

Ben, a University of Montana student and new signee with the Rocky Mountain Agency, recently came in for his first professional model photoshoot.  When first contacted about the shoot, I was excited as I don’t typically work with male models.  The goal: build a starter portfolio with clean, commercial looks that could be used to launch his modeling career.  The session included both studio and outdoor images, and was planned in collaboration with his agency.

Starting with Model Digitals

We started Ben’s shoot with a set of classic model digitals.  If you’re unfamiliar with the term, “model digitals” are clean, natural photos that show a model’s features without heavy editing, fancy styling, or dramatic lighting.  These are typically shot against a plain white background and used by agencies and clients to see a model’s raw potential.

In my home studio (yep, the very functional basement setup!), we kept it simple: white backdrop, soft lighting, and keeping Ben front and center.

Building Out a Commercial Portfolio

Ben had just signed with the Rocky Mountain Agency, and we wanted his first portfolio to stand out.  With guidance from Karlee Rink, the agency’s owner, we planned for three separate looks to showcase Ben’s versatility and marketability for commercial work — definitely not your average senior portrait vibe.

  1. Look One:  Casual but elevated.  Jeans, a grey turtleneck, and a brown coat layered on for texture. Karlee had recommended incorporating accessories so we added a stylish watch for personality and polish.
  2. Look Two:  Clean and professional.  Khakis paired with a classic white button-up shirt.
  3. Look Three:  A bold, outdoor vibe.  Neutral pants, tank top, and checkered button-down — plus a denim-on-denim look.

Studio Confidence and Natural Charisma

For a first-time model, Ben nailed it.  In the studio, he carried himself with confidence and took direction like a pro.  We were fortunate to have Karlee working with us in the studio to help guide and coach Ben.  We captured a full range of expressions — from capitalizing on Ben’s million-dollar smile to capturing more serious, moody looks. More than just “getting the shot” — it was also about helping Ben get comfortable in front of the camera and experience the flow of a professional shoot.

His favorite moment?  “Doing a goofy feeling pose and seeing it turn out way better than I thought it would,” Ben said.  That mindset — open to trying, learning on the fly, and receptive to coaching — made a huge difference.

Golden Hour at Blue Mountain

A few days later, we met at the Blue Mountain Trailhead in Missoula for the outdoor portion of Ben’s shoot.  We timed it for golden hour to catch that beautiful golden light just before sunset.

Ben wore his checkered shirt combo for the first set, followed by the classic all-American denim-on-denim look — jean jacket, white tee, and jeans.  Again, Ben shone during the outdoor session with total confidence and focus.

Reflections from the Model

After the shoot, Ben shared:

  • What surprised him most?  How fun it felt despite being new and a bit nervous.
  • What challenged him?  “Keeping poses interesting and varied.”
  • What advice would he give to other new models?  “Don’t be shy.  Study YouTube videos.  Practice in front of a mirror.  Embrace looking goofy — it’s part of the process.”

In addition to using the images for his modeling portfolio, Ben also plans to use them for social media and his LinkedIn profile, as he is currently a business major at the University of Montana.

Reviews from Ben and His Mom

Ben shared:

“Carin was easy to work with, it was my first shoot and I felt very comfortable.  She was accommodating and patient with me.  The pictures came out really good too!”

And his mom added:

“Carin did awesome on a photo shoot with my son, who needed to build a portfolio for a local modeling agency.  My son loved her!  Thank you Carin!”

Final Thoughts

This male model photoshoot was about more than just good images.  It was a fun and creatively stimulating collaboration — between the agency, the model, and the photographer — to build confidence, experience, and a solid foundation for Ben’s future modeling career.

Whether you’re a new model or looking to update your portfolio, I’d love to help you bring your vision to life in studio or out on location.

FAQs:  Male Model Photoshoot

What should I wear for a male model photoshoot?

Stick to well-fitting basics and avoid anything too flashy or branded unless discussed beforehand.  Bring multiple outfits, including layered options and a mix of casual and polished styles.  Seek guidance and direction for your agency, if possible.

What are model digitals and why are they important?

Model digitals are natural, unedited photos often shot on a plain white background to show your true features.  Agencies and clients rely on these for casting decisions.

How long does a male model photoshoot typically take?

Expect to spend 1.5–3 hours depending on the number of looks and whether the shoot includes both indoor and outdoor locations.

Do I need professional hair and makeup?

Not always, especially for male models.  Just come well-groomed with clean, styled hair.  Some clients opt for light grooming assistance if needed.  A fresh haircut is advised, and don’t forget to iron your wardrobe before the shoot.

Where do these shoots take place?
